Official title: SR PROGRAMMER ANALYST(T06BN) or PROGRAMMER ANALYST(T06DN) or ASSOC PROGRAMMER ANAL(T06FN)
Degree and area of specialization: B.S. in computer sciences, engineering, biochemistry, or life sciences. Advanced degree preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience: At least 2 years of programming experience required. The optimal candidate will have a working knowledge of Java, HTML, XML, Web server administration, knowledge of UNIX, and Windows operating systems, commands, utilities, scripting languages, and system administration techniques. Systems administration experience a plus. Basic understanding of structural biology would be useful, but is not a requirement. This person should also have effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact effectively and efficiently with all types of users.
Principal duties: The position will focus on the development and deployment of the Sesame laboratory information management system (LIMS) within CESG, and will report to the Sesame Team Leader.
40% Development, enhancement, and maintenance of application programs written in Java: Design and code programs and procedures from detailed or general specifications. Some system analysis in congress with user input / interviews will be required. Test and debug programs. Implement new and modified programs, procedures, and other procedures in a production environment. Prepare and update documentation for the users and programming staff. Assist with development and delivery of training for program users. Install programs and data in the training environment.
10% Analysis and design of new systems, and changes to existing systems: Interact with users to define requirements of new systems and / or maintenance and enhancements to existing systems. Analyze requirements and prepare design alternatives. Complete technical designs, prototypes, and programming specifications. Prepare system specifications and test plans.
40% Production Systems Management on Unix / Windows based systems: Diagnose and resolve system problems. Complete installations, changes or upgrades of systems by deadlines, and assure that new systems or changes / upgrades are successfully implemented. Develop backup resources for Sesame LIMS by training other staff in system support.
5% Professional Development: Develop professional relationships with users and co-workers. Share knowledge with other staff and provide assistance in areas of personal expertise. Participate in special assignments, activities, and programs sponsored by the group, department, or division. Improve knowledge of information systems skills, techniques, procedures, and methods through self-study and attending conferences, seminars, and workshops.
5% Perform other projects and duties, as assigned.

Degree and area of specialization: B.S. in biochemistry, engineering, computer sciences, or life sciences. Advanced degree preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience: At least 3 years of laboratory experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, or a related field, including experience in the use of scientific software and laboratory instrumentation. Preference will be given to persons with a background in developing laboratory protocols and / or scientific software. Excellent spoken and written communication skills are required. Previous technical writing experience preferred. Experience in an automated, data-rich environment will be preferred, although this is not a requirement.
Principal duties: The position will focus on the deployment and customization of the Sesame laboratory information management system (LIMS) within CESG, and will report to the CESG director. The position will be responsible for gathering user requirements and developing new protocols; revising old protocols such that they capture information needed for the creation of internal reports and external data depositions; and for conducting queries needed to assess success rates and costs of protocols and combinations of protocols.
The position will work with all members of the project to assure that data in Sesame is internally consistent and accurate. In cases where data remediation is advisable, the position will be responsible for carrying out this remediation in collaboration with director of the Sesame team and other CESG staff members. The position will be responsible for Sesame LIMS operational support, including the development of technical documentation, user training manuals, and standard operating procedures.
In addition to the above, the successful candidate will be responsible for working with the CESG staff to determine needs for new Sesame features and capabilities and their priorities, and to communicate these to the Sesame developers. In the case of new Sesame capabilities about to be released, the position will be responsible for evaluating these and for developing training materials and documentation to train users how the new features can be used in the laboratory or in managing the CESG project.
The position will be responsible for providing formal and informal training in the various facets of the Sesame LIMS. This will require a thorough understanding of the CESG process and workflow. The position will attend all regular CESG meetings and serve as an interface between all areas of the project, including executive committee, computing core, Bioinformatics, and the Sesame developers. The position will assist in achieving the goal of publishing journal articles and eventually a monograph on the Sesame LIMS.
